Fossil Code for Collectors Launched

Apr 11, 2008  Scotland  As a result of the growing popularity of the fossil collecting hobby, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) in Cromarty launched a best practice and responsible behavior code for collectors of fossils in Scotland. It is the world’s first Fossil Code aimed at safeguarding the ancient rock impressions. The code was created by SNH with the assistance of fossil collectors, paleontologists, Scotland museums and landowners who have an interest in Scotland’s fossil heritage.

The code contains the principles for best practices in fossil collecting, identifying, preserving and storing of fossil samples. It includes guidelines for on how to collect fossils responsibly without damaging the specimen or area where the fossil was discovered. The SNH fossil code provides collectors guidance on seeking permission, keeping detailed records, collecting responsibly, looking after and labeling the fossil specimens.
